Because many key aspects of human cognition evolved in ancestral vertebrates, mammals, and primates, research on animal cognition can provide rich insights into the human mind. An evolutionary research programme using broad comparisons among many species recognizes our cognitive kinship with other animals and provides a deeper understanding of cognitive evolution.
